Two Clifton men may have stabbed an Orchard Mesa man Wednesday night in retaliation for a vehicle’s slashed tires, according to a search warrant affidavit.
Cory Samora, 20, was listed in fair condition at St. Mary’s Hospital on Thursday afternoon after police said he was stabbed 11 times in the face and chest at his Orchard Mesa home by Carl Torrez, 22, and Jacob Kouris, 20.
The suspects, who live in a mobile home at 434 32 Road, No. 29, were in custody Thursday at the Mesa County Jail without bond on suspicion of attempted murder and first-degree assault.
According to the affidavit, Kouris and Torrez went to Samora’s home around midnight to confront him because they thought Samora had slashed the tires on Kouris’ mother’s vehicle.
Kouris said he punched Samora and then removed a credit-card style knife from his pocket.
“(Kouris) said he could not remember everything that happened after he removed the knife, because he was so angry he blacked out,” the affidavit said.
Torrez declined to interview with police and said he had been sleeping at his home since 8:30 that night until he was contacted by Mesa County Sheriff’s Department deputies, the affidavit said.
Samora, who lives in an apartment off his parents’ home, said he was talking on his phone at about midnight when he heard two people come through his door. He claimed he was hit by one of them and then felt “a gushing sensation” on his back. Samora then fled the apartment, yelled to his father for help and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, the affidavit said.
Samora identified two people named “Jacob” and “Carl” as his assailants and thought they may be cousins, the affidavit said.
Samora’s wounds included seven cuts to his torso, including a three-inch gaping wound on his abdomen and four cuts on his face and scalp, the affidavit said.
Deputies said they arrived at the suspects’ home and noticed blood on the steering wheel of a truck in the driveway. Kouris later told an investigator the blood came from his hands after he drove home, the affidavit said.
Kouris told police he thought his mother’s tires were slashed because he recently denounced his affiliation with the North Side Gang, the affidavit said.
