1 dead, trail of blood in Pear Park

Monday, November 02, 2009

Gunfire early Sunday in Pear Park left one person dead and another wounded, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

The names of the shooting victims have not been released. One person was detained by deputies but later released, sheriff’s spokeswoman Mary Gonzales said.

Gonzales gave no explanation for why the person in custody was released, but said investigators were not seeking a suspect.

The shootings occurred around 2:20 a.m. at 3007 Rood Ave. along a dead-end portion of Rood Avenue just east of Colorow Drive and south of D 1/2 Road. The area is east of 30 Road.

Deputies sealed off Rood Avenue east of Colorow Drive. Homes on the northeast and southeast corners of Rood Avenue at Colorow Drive were surrounded by yellow crime-scene tape most of the day Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Department would not let any vehicles leave Rood Avenue east of Colorow Drive. Investigators examined a red and white sport utility vehicle in a driveway along the south side of Rood Avenue where the shooting occurred. The rear window was shattered.

Robin Lucero, who lives two doors east of the driveway, said there was a blood trail leading from the SUV to the driveway of a house on the north side of Rood Avenue. The home, which faces Colorow Drive, has a sign hanging on a backyard fence that is clearly visible from where the shooting happened. It reads: “Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.”

Another neighbor, Stewart Miller, lives one house north of Rood Avenue on Colorow Drive, next to the home where the blood trail led. He said the residents of that home have friends visiting nearly every weekend. On Halloween night, he noticed many people at the residence before he went to bed and assumed they were having a party.

“We didn’t think nothing of it,” Miller said.

At 4:20 a.m. Sunday, he said, deputies knocked on his front door, asking whether he saw or heard anything. Miller said he heard nothing until deputies informed him of the double shooting.

“We were kind of shocked,” Miller said.

Residents who live behind the house on the south side of Rood Avenue, where neighbors said the shooting happened, were also surprised.

“I never heard a thing,” said Russell Dunton.

Deputies knocked on the Dunton’s door at 4:30 a.m., said his wife, Wilda. She said the person who lives in the neighboring home along Rood has two children, which she assumed stayed at the house only on the weekends. “This is a very quiet, beautiful neighborhood,” Wilda Dunton said.

I know the guy and he is an upstanding guy. A dear friend of mine in fact. Haven't spoke to him yet but I'm sure he did what he needed to in order to protect his own life. Don't be packing a gun unless you are going to be ready to use it. It's a shame especially when folks don't know the whole story. What would you have done? Waited until it was you that was shot?

to summer rain she did not go over to his house with a gun for no reason she was being harassed by him in the first place and by this time the cops had already been called and had not showed up she felt that she needed to do what she could to protect herself that is human nature intoxicated or not! and the gun was taken from her and she was shot multiple times possibly once in the back that is not in any way self defence on his part.

If this lady went with her son and a gun to a neighborıs house to harass him/them or do worse then she has no one to blame but herself! It is very sad that she died but she created the situation.

It is so sad to think that a grown adult male could shot a female and shot her 5 times. Good lord what the hell is going on in this city? I have had 2 friends of mine murdered here this summer, its sickening. A grown man wrestles a gun from her and then murders her instead of stopping there. Its rage not some one with sense. Over kill and sad for crystal and all whom loved her. Trail of blood? was she crawling home as he unloaded his weapon? I am shocked and outraged at the sense less crime that goes on in this comunity. Citizens should be outraged and grand junction needs to wake the hell up!

I live in that neighborhood, and yes bad stuff can and does happen. But why does that mean that all of Pear Park is "white trash"??? There are many good people around here and its bad apples that say crap like the "white trash" comment that start the trouble. Come forward and see how good "white trash" can be, hell of alot better than Ted, obviously!!

I found out today pretty much what happened in this incident. It is shocking. Of course, take into consideration that this is from a pretty close source, but still grapevine news.

Megan, I understand this lady that has been shot and killed was your friend. I am very sorry for loss. It's sad when any kind of unnecessary tragedy like this happens. But did you know that the gun that was used to kill this lady was brought to house where she was shot, by her? I heard she was throwing a big Halloween party, was intoxicated, and the cops got called on her. She assumed that it was a certain neighbor and went over with her son and a gun to either scare the hell out of or shoot the neighbor. Not a smart thing to do.

The neighbor was probably terrified for his life. Yes, he fought her gun away from her, and yes he shot her, killing her, and then shot her son. Was that going overboard? Some might say so. But perhaps this neighbor was so pumped up on fear adrenalin that he made a very bad decision. But what if she had shot him instead?

Everyone has lost all the way around in this situation. I feel very, very bad for this lady's family and for her son. I hope he fully recovers. Sorry again, Megan, for your loss of your friend. Alcohol has once again proved it is a world-class killer.

Ted, What makes a "Very quiet, beautiful neighborhood"? To be very honest, it is the nice people. If you look around, there are a lot of nice people with Big Hearts in the Pear Park area. I lived in the area and also lived on the West side of town. I met more nice people in the Pear Park area than I ever met on the West side of town. There is nothing but trouble all over the world; it is not just Pear Park.
