Trevor Stapp hasn’t even had 10 practices this season, but he’s ready to wrestle.

The Mesa State College freshman, who started practicing last week, will wrestle for the Mavericks in the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open on Sunday in Greeley.

“I’m excited,” Stapp said. “I feel like I’ve had enough practices, but we’ll find out. I want to see where I’m at. This will be a good test.”

Stapp missed the first 4½ weeks of practice because he was playing football for the Mavericks.

“I came to Mesa to play football,” he said. “The wrestling coaches talked me into it. I figured I’d miss it if I didn’t (wrestle).”

Stapp a defensive lineman, didn’t have much trouble getting in wrestling shape. He is 25 pounds under the maximum 285 pounds for the heavyweights.

Stapp was a two-time state wrestling champ in Arizona. He has a school-record 162 wins and a school-record 95 pins. He was 101-0 his final two seasons.

“It’s hard to say what he’s capable of,” Mesa State coach Chuck Pipher said. “We’re excited to see what he does. He should see the two finalists from last weekend this weekend.”

Pipher will have 22 to 25 make the trip, including close to a dozen unattached wrestlers.

“We’d like to bring away three or four medals and improve,” Pipher said. “We weren’t as quick on our feet. We need to ride better as well. We haven’t worked on the top position much.”

Mesa State will see fellow RMAC schools Mines, CSU-Pueblo, New Mexico Highlands and Western State in the tournament.

Swimming

The Mavericks will mix it up a little bit this weekend when they compete in the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Golden.

The meet is Saturday and Sunday and is hosted by Colorado School of Mines.

Instead of each swimmer competing in her best events, they will swim in two of their top events and two events of their choice.

“You plateau if you swim in the same events all the time,” Mesa State coach Brian Pearson said. “We want to try to broaden their horizon.”

It will also give the team a chance to clear their minds after beginning a stretch of intense training recently.

“Right now, we’re swimming through it,” Pearson said. “We’re training hard. The kids are torn down.”

The Rocky Mountain Invitational will have 14 individual events and five relays, with 10 events Saturday and nine Sunday.

The Mavericks (3-1) will compete against Mines, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Northern State (S.D.), the Metro State club and the University of Colorado club.

“Moorhead will give us a run and CU could if it brings a full squad,” Pearson said.

Pearson said freshman Denby Gardiner and sophomore Madeline Morris are poised to have big meets.
