One man died, and another suffered serious injuries Wednesday afternoon after a rollover accident on Interstate 70 in Grand Junction.

Around 3:15 p.m., a westbound pickup drifted off the right side of the roadway along a curve, slammed into a light pole and rolled just west of the Horizon Drive interchange, Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

The driver, whose identity wasn’t released Wednesday night, was pronounced dead at the scene, Porras said.

The passenger was ejected partially and pinned in the truck before being freed by firefighters. Porras described his injuries as “fairly serious” and said he was taken in an ambulance to a hospital.

The truck ended up on its top, down a slight embankment, roughly 30 feet from the rear of Holiday Inn and Suites, 2751 Crossroads Blvd. Debris from the wreck damaged glass doors at the rear of the motel, and hotel employees secured the doors with tape.

Several witness described hearing a collision and seeing the truck roll several times.

The westbound on-ramp from Horizon Drive to I-70 was closed for several hours. Westbound I-70 traffic was reduced to one lane as police investigated.
