Arrests made in theft of radioactive device

THORNTON — Two people are accused of stealing a portable gauge containing radioactive material during a vehicle break-in in Thornton earlier this month.

Alexander King and Tasha Stapleton are charged with theft from a vehicle and trespass with intent to commit a crime.

According to KMGH-TV, the device uses radioactivity to measure moisture and compaction in soil, asphalt and concrete on construction sites. State hazardous materials officials publicized the theft because the otherwise harmless device could emit higher-than-normal levels of radiation and pose a health risk if it was damaged.
