Bill urges Colo. school debates on creationism

DENVER — A Colorado Republican lawmaker wants to encourage schools and colleges to have debates about creationism, evolution, and global warming.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Stephen Humphrey will get a hearing Monday and is scheduled for a vote in the House Education committee. The proposal calls on public schools and colleges to create an environment for students to encourage scientific questioning and be able to respond respectfully to differences of opinion on “controversial issues in science education.”

The legislation is likely to fail in the Democratic-led committee. If the bill were to pass, schools and colleges would be told of the law annually beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
