Blagojevich defiant

The Democratically controlled Illinois state Legislature has formed a special panel to consider the impeachment of Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The governor and his top aide were arrested by the FBI a week ago on suspension of trying to sell his authority to appoint a Senate replacement for President-elect Barack Obama, amid other charges.

The Democratic attorney general for the state has asked the Illinois Supreme Court to declare Blagojevich unfit for office. And growing numbers of people of both parties are calling on the governor to resign.

Blagojevich’s response to all this?

He spent eight hours Sunday talking to a top Chicago attorney known to represent public figures in trouble. And his spokesman dismissed rumors that Blagojevich was preparing to step down as early as today.

All of this is in keeping with the governor’s me-first reputation, developed and well known long before last Tuesday’s arrest affidavit became public.

Citizens of Illinois may hope he’ll put the good of his state ahead his own interests. But the Legislature is doing the right thing by initiating impeachment efforts in the event he doesn’t.
