Boardings at GJ airport soar past total for 2007

More regular direct flights out of Grand Junction Regional Airport have led to passenger numbers for the year reaching a record level, it was announced Monday.

Through October, year-to-date enplanements at the airport were more than 175,000 — surpassing the 2007 total of more than 168,000.

Enplanements are the number of passengers boarding an aircraft.

According to airport officials, new direct flights added this year at the airport are the reason that the numbers are up.

A regular American Eagle flight to Dallas/Fort Worth, as well as regular flights to Denver on Frontier Airlines, were cited by the airport as bumping up the passenger numbers.

Six airlines fly direct from Grand Junction Regional Airport to five locations: Allegiant Air to Las Vegas, American Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth, Delta SkyWest to Salt Lake City, Frontier Airlines to Denver, United Airlines to Denver and U.S. Airways to Phoenix.

Month by month, passenger numbers continue to climb at the airport. Three times this year, monthly enplanements topped the 20,000-passenger mark — May,  July and October. There were just 14,604 enplanements in October of last year.
