Briefs: Biz Buzz November 09, 2008

Sometime between the matinee Carole Chowen attended Thursday and the evening show at Cinema at the Avalon, something happened. Something slightly reminiscent of the time following the last time an economic crisis hit Main Street.

The theater, then the Cooper, closed during the mid-1980s and stayed dormant for about 10 years. Before the lights came on following the last show for Chowen, word was out to sponsors that Cinema at the Avalon would cease to exist, this time after five years of showing independent films.

Chowen, 66, of Grand Junction, has volunteered for all but eight of the Telluride Film Festivals since the event’s inception.

“This is the centerpiece of Main Street,” Chowen said of Cinema at the Avalon. She was among nine patrons, comparable to weeknights at the Denver indie theater.

“To see some of the same caliber films of the Telluride Film Fest come through here was such a treat,” she said.

Officials said the last show will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday. It will be “Bottle Shock.”
