Buffalo Wild Wings to open near mall

Buffalo Wild Wings will open in the former home of Smuggler’s Brewpub & Grille, 2412 U.S. Highway 6&50, in late spring or early summer.

The national restaurant chain is known for boneless, Buffalo and New York-style wings with 14 signature sauces. There currently are 821 restaurants in the U.S. and two locations worldwide.

“Simply put, wings, beer and sports. That sums up Buffalo Wild Wings,” said Scott Sahling, the company’s region manager for Colorado.

He added Buffalo Wild Wings has been looking to open in Grand Junction for some time.

Sahling said the restaurant will have numerous big-screen projection televisions and 50-inch flat-screen televisions. Every National Football League game will be broadcast as well as games in other major sports.

Sahling said the restaurant has more than great food, describing it as a fun, relaxed atmosphere where friends and family can gather.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Smuggler’s Brewpub were the only other tenants of the building, and their stays were short-lived. Still, Sahling believes Buffalo Wild Wings has found the right opportunity with the Mesa Mall property.

“The Mesa Mall is a great point of synergy in Grand Junction. We think it’s the right place to be,” Sahling said.

He doesn’t think access to the location — it lacks a direct turn-in from U.S. 6&50 — will deter people looking for good food.

The franchise officially signed a lease with the mall this week. Sahling declined to say for how long, but he said Buffalo Wild Wings plans to be in Grand Junction for a long time.

The coming competition from a national chain doesn’t scare Steve Danner, owner of the Fly ‘N Roosters at 200 W. Grand Ave., Unit 5, and Roosters at 569 32 Road, Unit 14, in Coronado Plaza. Danner is currently changing the name of the Roosters location to Fly ‘N Roosters as well.

“Bring on the competition. I’m always ready,” Danner said. “We’re a locally owned establishment. After two months, (customers) will be back to see me.”

Sahling said prices will be competitive with other wing restaurants, such as Hooters, and the atmosphere will draw a strong crowd of sports fans.

Extensive renovations to the building during the next couple of months will be done by local and national contractors, Sahling said.
