Cancer study participants needed in Grand Junction
The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers to participate in a long-term study to aid cancer research.
Volunteers for the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 need to be between the ages of 30 and 65 and have a medical history clear of any cancer diagnoses. People who have had basal or squamous cell skin cancer are still eligible for the study.
Volunteers will be asked to sign a consent form, fill out a small survey, and provide a small blood sample and a waist circumference measurement when they sign-up for the study. Sign-up events will take place from 7 to 10:30 a.m. June 25, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 26, 3 to 6:30 p.m. June 27, and 8 to 11:30 a.m. June 29. Each event will take place at St. Mary’s Cancer Center in the St. Mary’s Advanced Medicine Pavilion at 750 Wellington Ave., through Entrance 25.
After signing up, participants will be asked to fill out a lengthier survey at home, then complete periodic follow-up surveys every few years for the next 20 to 30 years. The survey information will be used to help cancer researchers better understand how lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors impact cancer prevention or development.
The American Cancer Society and St. Mary’s Hospital will host a kickoff event from 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 2 at St. Mary’s Regional Cancer Center to encourage people to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3.
