CHEERS! The Avalon Ale

Avalon Ale

Avalon Ale

Rockslide brewpub’s new Avalon Ale was clearly designed to be one of those summertime, lazy-day-drinking events best enjoyed on a patio with plenty of shade and time and brain cells to kill.

The jury’s out on whether this seasonal German wheat style addition to Rockslide’s (401 Main St.) lineup hit its mark, in my humble opinion.

It’s a solid, light beer. A pretty golden color, too.

Nice lemons, babe.

When this hefeweizen first touched my mouth, I was immediately hit with all that banana goodness that defines a good hefe. Toss in a strong showing from clove.

I’m not a huge fruity beer guy, but when the mood strikes I like that banana thing coming on strong.

In those first few tasting moments, I was reminded somewhat of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. In fact, I wish I had a Shandy here at my cubicle.

What I wasn’t a fan of was Avalon Ale’s slightly bitter aftertaste that punctuated each sip, the only real head-scratcher for what was until then a pretty good drinking experience.

Oh, well. It’s worth a go-round or two next time you’re downtown.
