Churches setting up for services

FATHER JOHN FARLEY sets up for a Christmas Eve service at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 790 26 1/2 Road in Grand Junction on Tuesday. The church has Christmas Eve Masses scheduled for 4 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.  The church will also celebrate Christmas Day Masses at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The 4 p.m. Mass on Thursday is for children.

The churches are decorated, and children and pastors across the Grand Valley are preparing for Christmas Eve.

“In one sense, the message is the same message from year to year, that God emerges in our reality and our own skin to be with us as a sign of hope and compassion,” said The Rev. John Farley of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. “This year, we’ve chosen a set of readings looking at it from the span of history, from Abraham to David to the Exile, to Joseph and the men and women who are a sign of salvation history.”

During his church’s Christmas Eve service, Farley plans to read from the New Testament book of Matthew, looking at the genealogy of Jesus, whose birth Christmas celebrates.

Immaculate Heart, 790 26 1/2 Road, has Christmas Eve Masses scheduled for 4 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Immaculate Heart also will celebrate Masses on Christmas Day at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The 4 p.m. Thursday Mass is a children’s mass. The sanctuary is usually filled by 3:45 p.m., Farley said. The rest of the Masses are traditional, but the 4:15 p.m. Christmas Eve service takes place in the Parish Hall.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 330 White Ave., is planning Masses for 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and midnight Christmas Eve. The
English-language Christmas Day Mass will be at 10 a.m. and the Spanish-language Mass will be at noon.
First United Methodist Church, 522 White Ave., will have a children’s service at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve with the children re-enacting the nativity scene. An open communion will be offered.

Later that night, the First United Methodist Church will have a more traditional services at 7 and 9. Soloist James Werner will perform.

Redlands United Methodist Church, 527 Village Way, will have Christmas Eve candlelight services at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The 6 p.m. service is contemporary style and the 8 p.m. service is traditional. Both will feature communion, music and a message.

The First Presbyterian Church, 390 27 1/2 Road, will have a children’s service at 4 p.m. and a traditional services, including a liturgical dance to “O Holy Night,” at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Candles will light the later service, which will include communion.

The Rev. Tom Hansen’s message is titled “Christ is Here.”

Canyon View Vineyards Church, 736 24 1/2 Road, has services scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. with traditional carols. Vineyard’s downtown campus will have a 5 p.m. service at Avalon Theatre, 645 Main St.

First Baptist Church, 720 Grand Ave., will have a candlelight service at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve.

The First Church of the Nazarene, 2802 Patterson Road, will have one service at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve with a choir singing Christmas carols and hymns.

Unity Church, 3205 N. 12th St., plans a candlelight service at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve.
