RSSColo. BLM plans roundup of 138 wild horses
MEEKER — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management says it will gather an estimated 138 wild horses in northwest Colorado and place most of them up for adoption.
The BLM says the horses southwest of Meeker are outside an area designated for managing wild horses. The roundup is set for Oct. 11.
The BLM has said it will use helicopters to herd the horses into corrals. Ones not sold or adopted will be sent to long-term pastures.
Federal officials won’t gather any of the 318 horses within the 190,000-acre designated management area then. But the agency is analyzing ways to thin that herd to the target level of between 135 and 235 horses.
