Marvin and Sue Kapushion recently showed nine quarter horses at the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association’s PreDenver Circuit. The circuit is a precursor to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, which was Jan. 12–27.

At the circuit, two horses placed in the top five in the professional class of the western pleasure competition and two placed in top three in the novice amateur class of western pleasure.

“The horses are judged on movement and manners during this specific competition,” Sue Kapushion said.

The Kapushions have received a number of other awards at the National Western Stock Show over the years.

In 2008, accompanied by Dierks Bentley’s ‘What Was I Thinkin’” and Christina Aguilera’s “Candy Man,” the Kapushions put their horses through reining patterns and placed 10th and 11th in the show’s RAM Invitation Freestyle Reining competition.

In reining events, riders guide horses through a specific pattern of agility exercises, and competitors often pick a theme and costume to make show more entertaining for the judges and audience, according to the Kapushions.

The Kapushions formed Kapushion Training in 1985, the same year they married. When they aren’t training horses on their 16-acre property near Whitewater, they are on the road showing and judging.
In 2012, the couple judged at 17 circuits and showed in 14 circuits, they said. There can be more than one show per circuit, so one circuit can last more than a single day.
