Feds waive entry fee for monument this weekend
The National Park Service will waive fees to Colorado National Monument Saturday and Sunday.
Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar announced that the waived fees will be offered as a way to encourage Americans seeking affordable vacations to visit their national parks and national refuges. A second fee-free weekend is set for Aug. 14-15.
Visitors to the Colorado National Monument Saturday and Sunday can participate in several ranger-led programs.
The “Looking for Lizards” guided hike is 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and features an investigation into the amazing world of lizards. Meet at the Devil’s Kitchen Picnic Area for the 2.4 mile hike. Take water and wear sturdy walking shoes.
On Sunday, the “Canyon Rim Ramble” guided hike is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Meet at the Visitor Center for the one-mile hike. Take water and walking shoes.
“Canyon Carving Forces” porch talks are at 10 and 11 a.m., and 2 and 3 p.m., Saturday or 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, at the Visitor Center.
