Fairview ends Fruita’s season

Fairview scored six-and-a-half minutes into the game Wednesday, which was all its defense needed as the Knights defeated Fruita Monument 3-0 in their first-round game of the Class 5A girls soccer playoffs.

The fifth-seeded Knights (12-3-1) posted their eighth shutout of the season and held the 28th-seeded Wildcats (9-7-1) without a shot on goal in the first half.

Boulder-based Fairview scored its first goal after a header from midfield rolled slowly toward the Wildcats’ net, where it looked like it would be cleared easily by the defense. Instead, the Knights’ Reci Smith raced to it knocked it into the net.

The Knights took a 2-0 lead into the half thanks to a goal in the 32nd minute. Steady rain fell in the second half, and the final goal came from Smith with about two minutes left.
