Gym class emphasis could shift to health, social wellness

Gym classes across the state could have a new look in 2012.

Instead of focusing primarily on physical activity and fitness,  proposed new state standards suggest teaching children movement, personal health, prevention and risk management, and physical, emotional and social wellness.

A physical wellness class for high school students began this fall in School District 51. It is a semester course worth half a credit and is required for graduation.

Maggie Childers, District 51 curriculum specialist,  said she is interested in seeing how that class meshes with the new physical education content standards, which are scheduled for adoption by the state board of education, with revisions, Dec. 10. So far, said Childers, she has been impressed with the proposal.

Colorado is revising standards for 11 subjects this year. The state Department of Education also held the meetings Monday about drama and theater arts, visual art, dance and world languages. Meetings on math, writing and reading, music, science, social studies and personal finance draft have already been held.
