Honors earned at History Day contest

Middle school and high school students competed Saturday in a regional Colorado History Day contest at Mesa State College.

The competition involved students presenting papers, exhibits, websites and skits about historical figures and events. Topics ranged from Colorado and world history to politics and court cases.

In the middle school category, best paper honors went to Nikki Crocker of Delta Middle School; best group performance went to Andrea Urista, Megan Parker and Page Jones of Barone Middle School in Meeker; and Linh Nguyan of Delta Middle School had the best individual website.

Mikayla Unrun and Morcina Samiento of Ridgeway Secondary School placed first for best group website, followed by Barone Middle School’s Mckenna Kummer, Jamie McLaughlin, Linda Olives and Amber Holding in second and Delta Middle School’s Cade Gafford and Jacob Swisher in third.

Barone’s Reagan Pearce took first for individual exhibit, followed by Delta’s Chastin Ellington in second and Olathe Middle School’s Audrey Beth Standsberry in third. Olathe’s Dexter Flick and Trent Rose placed first in group exhibit, followed by second-place finishers Bailey Starritt and Jorden Solseth and third-place finishers Cassie Franks and Natalie Hardman, all of Olathe.

In the high school category, Russell Harris and Jacob Solseth of Olathe High School won best group exhibit, Robert M. O’Hayre II of Gunnison High School had the best website, and R-5 High School’s Katie Prickett won for best individual performance. The top group performance honor went to Gunnison High School’s Katelyn Barrett, Spenser Barrett, Andrea Meldrum and Kit Reed.

Winners from Saturday’s Western Slope contest and nine other regional competitions throughout Colorado will compete in a state contest May 7 in Denver.

Winners from the Colorado contest and those from other states and U.S. territories will qualify to attend the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day contest June 12-16 at the University of Maryland in College Park.
