Horseplay: Spring Gather to benefit local 4-H clubs
Riders young and old will get a chance to test their skills and those of their horses in ranch-related activities next month at the Spring Gather Open Ranch Horse Show. The show, put on by 4-H horse clubs in the valley, will run May 4-5 in the Grandstand Arena at Mesa County Fairgrounds.
“It’s all designed more for the ranch horse than the show horse,” said Tom Sharpe, the show manager.
There will be trail classes, but with more of an emphasis on traditional ranch obstacles than one might see in a Western Pleasure trail class, he said. There will also be classes in cutting and other types of cow work, ranch horsemanship and halter work.
In addition, there will be five different divisions, based on the age and experience of riders.
The Spring Gather is a fund-raising event, designed to help youngsters who show horses through 4-H clubs in Mesa County.
Entry fees range from $35 to $75 for the day, depending on the age of the rider.
