Insurance firm honors 9 valley Latino students

Nine 2009 Latino high school graduates were honored by State Farm Insurance along with the Latin-Anglo Alliance Foundation at State Farm’s annual banquet Wednesday night.

Over the years, State Farm has been a major contributor to the Alliance’s scholarship fund.

Those recognized were recent Grand Junction High School graduates Herman Gutierrez,  Jose Morales, and Zephaniah Quigley. Morales and Gutierrez plan on attending Mesa State College. Gutierrez will study kinesiology, while Morales has yet to declare a major. Quigley will move on to Colorado State University to pursue an engineering degree.

Amelia Macias-Briseno, Monica Treto, Aura Medrano and Diego Castellanos, all 2009 Central High School graduates were also feted. Treto and Castellanos are headed to the University of Colorado at Boulder. Treto’s emphasis of study will be biochemistry, while Castellanos will major in film studies. Macias-Briseno will enroll at the University of Northen Colorado and study elementary education while Medrano will pursue a liberal arts degree at Mesa State College.
Fruita Monument High School graduates Victoria Villa and Megan Velarde will attend Mesa State College and study business and political science respectively.
