Jabs brings back American Furniture Warehouse to Grand Junction
American Furniture Warehouse is returning to Grand Junction.
The Englewood, Colo.-based furniture store plans to open its 13th Colorado location on 20 acres settled between Wal-Mart at 2545 Rimrock Ave. and Gold’s Gym at 700 Maldonado St. along U.S. Highway 6&50. The store closed on the last two parcels of four parcels on the property on Thursday. The price of all four parcels together was about $9.9 million.
The property sale was likely the biggest in Mesa County in 2009, according to Stacey Cook, an agent with Hill & Homes, who finalized the sale Thursday.
“It’s a good end to a year that’s been pretty tough,” Cook said.
American Furniture Warehouse owner Jake Jabs said he plans to open a 150,000-square-foot building on the property that will include a warehouse and a showroom. The store could open as soon as early 2011.
Jabs said the store will need about 150 staff members for sales, office, delivery and staging work. He said he wants to hire local contractors to construct the building.
Jabs said he opened an American Furniture Warehouse store in Grand Junction in 1984, but it closed the next year due to poor economic times in the area. A growing number of American Furniture Warehouse products being delivered to the Grand Valley prompted Jabs to return to the area.
“Grand Junction is probably under-stored right now. I think we’ll do well there,” Jabs said.
Thursday’s property sale means Gibson RV will no longer be located at 2549 U.S. Highway 6&50, which is part of the 20 acres.
Abbey Carpet & Floor may remain at its 2571 U.S. Highway 6&50 location and rent from American Furniture Warehouse, but Jabs and Abbey owner Jeff Jacobson said the store might be moved. Jacobson said if the store moves, it likely will reopen nearby.
The furniture company’s next step is to discuss entrances and road work surrounding the store site with the city of Grand Junction. After plans and permits are settled, construction should begin, Jabs said.
The store will deliver to towns within about a 100-mile radius of Grand Junction.
