July Yard of the Month, 2013
The July winners for the Yard of the Month are Butch and Peggy Shaw, who live at 481 Escondido, on the Redlands.
Peggy is an avid gardener and has been involved in the CSU Master Gardener Program since 2002. Peggy works at a local garden center during the summer months while Butch keeps up a fine vegetable garden.
The couple did their own landscape design and planting after taking a course that inspired Peggy to “try and create the look of an oasis” in their yard, which has dry and parched environment.
Set against the backdrop of the Colorado National Monument, this water-wise landscape is an ideal example of how a xeriscape can be colorful and provide year-round visual appeal, while using only a fraction of the water needed to maintain a conventional lawn.
Easy-to-care-for favorites in this landscape are May Night Salvia, Red Valerian and Blue Mist Spirea.
Yard of the Month is presented by the Grand Junction Forestry Board, The Daily Sentinel, and the city of Grand Junction. The the July Yard of the Month winners, the Shaws will receive a $25 gift card from Lowe’s.
Nominations for the August Yard of the Month are due Aug. 24.
To qualify for Yard of the Month, the yard must be within the Grand Junction city limits. The front/side yards — what can be viewed from the street — will be judged on appearance, tidiness as evidenced by pruned, trimmed and shaped foliage, defined lawn, borders, flower bed and visual appeal.
