Tuesday last immunization clinic before school resumes

The Mesa County Health Department will offer Tdap booster shots from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lincoln Park.

This is the only immunization clinic left before the school year starts. Appointments are required for the clinic, which can be made by calling 248-6900. The shot costs $14.50 and may be covered by insurance. Anyone unable to pay will receive a discount or have the entire fee waived.

All District 51 middle school and high school students are required to prove they’ve gotten a Tdap booster shot for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis before they start school Aug. 23.

Students can get immunizations from their family physicians or the Health Department, 510 29 1/2 Road, Monday through Thursday.

To enroll in District 51, kindergarten through third-grade students have to have two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, three doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine, four doses of the polio vaccine, and five doses of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (Tdap) immunization. They will need two doses of the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or documentation by a physician that the child had chickenpox.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students have the same requirements as their younger counterparts, except they need only one dose of the varicella vaccine or a doctor’s note describing the student’s history with chickenpox.

Middle school students need just one dose of the varicella vaccine or proof of having chickenpox, plus the same shot records as elementary students and one dose of the Tdap booster.

High school students need one Tdap dose and have to meet all the upper elementary requirements, except they don’t need to have proof of having the chickenpox or the varicella vaccine, and they need only three doses of the polio vaccine.
