Winter Signals

Focus on light as it touches the last

    clinging leaves on the barberry bush,

      glowing red in the cold.

 

See sparrows at the feeder -

    their quick movements as they flit

      from food to safety.

 

Center with clear eyes on the strong blue

    skeletons of winter trees,

      like steadfast women of our past;

 

let them move through you:

    sisters, stitching the sky

      with interlocking patterns.

 

Give them quiet names: Grace

    Serenity, Hope, to reveal the passion

      of the blue shadows of winter - focus.
