Lines West: ‘Marigold at War’

Marigold at War

Sunrise is orange from blowing dust

dust that turned my orange petals beige

dust that coats your uniform, your skin

even the lips around your cigarette

which you will stub out in my rusted coffee can

full of dirt, like any other dirt,

not special or nourishing, just hard, sandy

my thin roots moistened by coffee dregs

from the bottom of your cup

You, sent here by a well meaning nation

I, sent by a second grader

seed in a care package to any soldier

lonely as you are

in half an hour we will both wither in the heat
