Max Muscle Sports Nutrition opening in Grand Junction

Max Muscle Sports Nutrition will open Monday at 2536 Rimrock Ave., Unit 500.

The national fitness franchise offers supplements, proteins and vitamins, mostly in powder form so it’s easier on the digestive system, according to Mary Leeds, co-owner of the Grand Junction store.

Leeds, who lives in Grand Junction, started using Max Muscle products five years ago. The amateur fitness competitor liked the products so much she decided to partner with fellow Mesa State College graduate Donnie Tanner and open the area’s first Max Muscle store. Tanner is a farmer and rancher who lives in Cortez.

Together, Tanner and Leeds plan to open at least four stores on the Western Slope, with the next location in Montrose.

Max Muscle products caught Leeds’ attention because they go through seven levels of quality ingredient testing. Most supplements approved by the Food and Drug Administration go through one level of quality testing, she said.

“It’s not just a lot of additives. You get what you pay for,” she said.

The store will also carry other brands of supplements, exercise equipment such as weight-lifting gloves and kettle balls, and work-out clothes, including gear for fans of the dance class Zumba. Max Muscle also will work with personal trainers and gastric bypass patients to help formulate diet plans. Each employee is nationally certified to offer nutrition advice as a personal nutrition coach.

Customers shouldn’t expect to find weight loss gimmicks in this store, although they can get advice on weight loss, Leeds said. The store is more about general health, she said, and helping consumers achieve their goals, whether those goals are to fight aging, get in shape, or increase endurance so they can enjoy strenuous activities without getting sore.

Max Muscle will host a ribbon cutting on Wednesday and a grand opening in July or August. The grand opening will feature guests Shane Carwin, an Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight, and Jessica Putnam, a sports model and International Federation of Body Builders figure pro.
