Get your bicycle tuned and sunscreen on as the Grand Valley warms in May. It’s a glorious month for appreciating the outdoors as well as the special people in our lives. In that spirit, we offer this trio for May.
You’re No. 1!
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12. Along with giving the moms in your life flowers, notes, breakfast in bed and other expressions of your affection, consider expanding your people appreciation list during May. Here are some opportunities:
■ Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6–10. As the 2012–13 school year comes to a close, be sure to recognized the efforts of area educators.
■ May is National Military Appreciation Month with Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 10 and Memorial Day on May 30.
■ Provider Appreciation Day is May 10, a date to recognize child care providers and educators.
We know that the summer solstice is more than a month away, but in Grand Junction two things mark the unofficial start of summer: the city outdoor swimming pool opening and JUCO week.
■ Dive in: Lincoln Park-Moyer Swimming Pool opens May 25. Admission is $4.75 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 3–17 and $2.50 for access to the water slide both adults and children.
■ Up to bat: Junior College World Series begins May 25 with games every day for a week at Suplizio Field in the Lincoln Park Sports Complex. Go to jucogj.org for information and look for The Daily Sentinel’s JUCO tab in the May 24 Daily Sentinel.
With the warmer weather, the number of area 5Ks has jumped. Sign up to run or walk one of these events.
■ Grand Valley Marathon, which has a 5K, 10K and half marathon along with the full marathon, is May 11 (mammothmarathons.org/grand-valley-marathon/).
■ Mom’s Day 5K is on Mother’s Day, May 12 (http://pat4158.wix.com/momsday5k#).
■ Mike the Headless Chicken 5K is May 18 (http://www.miketheheadlesschicken.org/mike-5k).
(And to those of you who participated in the
Girls on the Run 5K on Saturday, good job!)
