Mesa County DA drops sex charge, forwards info to Florida authorities

Prosecutors have dropped charges in Mesa County against a man accused of having sex with the family dog in front of his 7-year-old son.

Jason Lee McRoberts, 30, however, isn’t entirely off the hook.

Prosecutors said they were forwarding the case to Florida authorities.

“We still believe this happened,” Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger said. “We just don’t believe it happened in Grand Junction.”

McRoberts was charged with obscenity and cruelty to animals after the mother of his son told authorities that the boy had tried to have sex with her dog when he was visiting her in Texas.

The boy told his mother that McRoberts made him watch the act.

The boy’s statement included a detailed, factual description of the event, including the dog, the house and the time of day, Hautzinger said.

McRoberts now lives in Castle Rock. He was free on $1,000 bond. He still faces trial on an unrelated charge of indecent exposure.

Grand Junction police will forward the results of their investigation to authorities in Florida, Hautzinger said.

McRoberts’ attorney, Colleen Scissors, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Mesa County District Judge Valerie Robison dismissed the Mesa County charges without prejudice, meaning that they can be filed anew if law enforcement finds evidence that offenses happened in Mesa County.
