Mesa grapplers beat ‘Boys
Colorado Mesa University bounced back from its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling loss by beating New Mexico Highlands University 30-11 Wednesday.
The No. 9-ranked Mavericks (19-2, 5-1 RMAC) won the dual’s first five matches, which started at 125 pounds, to build a 21-0 lead. Jonathon Stelling (125) and Drew Schumann (141) won decisions, 7-5 and 4-2, respectively. Tyler Nelson (133) claimed a major decision, Jon Gappmaier (157) earned a technical fall, and James Martinez (149) pinned his man in the second period.
The Cowboys (4-6, 1-4) won a 4-1 decision at 165 and a major decision at 174, but Nick Petersen’s 3-1 decision at 184 put the Mavericks ahead 24-7 and sealed the dual victory.
Paco Retana’s pin with one second left in the third overtime at 285 capped Colorado Mesa’s scoring.
“I thought we for the most part wrestled pretty well,” Mavericks coach Chuck Pipher said. “It was good to get back on track and get a good win under our belt.”
Wednesday’s win set the stage for Colorado Mesa’s showdown at Adams State (6-3, 4-1) tonight, 7 p.m.
