Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get to the Mike the Headless Chicken Festival on Friday and Saturday, May 18–19, in downtown Fruita.

Year after year, the beloved Mike, a Wyandotte chicken, makes headlines despite having no head. In September 1945, Mike’s destiny as dinner was interrupted when he survived an ax blow and found fame for 18 months as a headless wonder.

Events celebrating his legendary status will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, May 18, with the opening of the Mike Store and artisan and food vendors. A bike rodeo with safety instruction will be from 5–7 p.m.

Destinee Reed will perform from 5–6:30 p.m. Friday on the Civic Center Pavilion stage, followed from 7–9:30 p.m. by Great American Taxi featuring Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon.

Set your rooster to crow early Saturday morning, May 19, and get in line for the Lions Club pancake breakfast, which will goes from 7–10 a.m. near the IOOF Hall on the Circle.

Mike’s May Madness Car Show will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and the Mike 5K run/walk will start at 9 a.m. Day of event registration for the 5K will be from 7–8:30 a.m..

The Mike Store, artisan and food vendors will be open from 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Saturday. Also on the schedule for Saturday is a disc golf tournament at Snooks Bottom; Mike’s Dirt Jump competition at Fruita Bike Park; a poker ride; Peep eating and wing eating contests; pony rides, bungee trampoline and free lawn games.

Stray Grass will entertain from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Jack + Jill will take the stage from 4–6:30 p.m., followed by The Williams Brothers at 7:30 p.m.
