Numerous events planned to honor veterans
Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.
A number of events are scheduled to recognize these folks who have answered the call of duty. Here are some of those events:
Holy Family Catholic School intermediate students invite the entire community and especially our local veterans to a Veterans Day Celebration at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., in school’s gym, 786 26 1/2 Road. Students will honor veterans during a ceremony that will include songs, readings and touching salutes. Visitors are encouraged to wear red, white and blue. The Veterans Day observance at the Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial Park will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Fruita Colorado Welcome Center south of Interstate 70. Grand Junction Police Chief John Camper will deliver the keynote speech for the event, which will include a fly over by VictorFlight of Montrose and the Grand Mesa Pipes and Drums. Parking is available and participants are encouraged to bring their own seating.
Wildcat Car Wash will honor all military and service personnel Friday, Nov. 11, by giving them a free car wash. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 697 Pine St. (18 Road) in Fruita. Call 201-1060 for information.
Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que will honor all former and active duty military with a free meal from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at 2440 U.S. Highway 6&50. The Two Meat Salute features one’s choice of two meats, one side, a cornbread muffin and corn on the cob. Proof of service or a veterans organization card required. The All Services Military Ball is set for Friday, Nov. 11 at Two Rivers Convention Center. Cocktails and silent auction will be at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $50 per person and proceeds will go to the Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial Park Scholarship. Texas Roadhouse, 2870 North Ave., invites veterans to a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. All veterans, active, retired or former U.S. military, can choose from one of 10 entrees, two side dishes, plus a beverage. Applebee’s, 711 Horizon Drive, will thank our nation’s Veterans and Active Duty Military by inviting them for a free thank you meal from 11 a.m. to midnight Friday, Nov. 11. Call 256-0022 for information.
Veterans Day activities will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at The Commons of Hilltop, 625 27 1/2 Road, near the flag pole. Call 243-3333 for information.

Free lunch for veterans will be served at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at The Atrium of Grand Valley, 3260 N. 12th St. Donations will be accepted to benefit Outward Bound for Veterans, 256-0006.
A Veterans Day fee-free weekend hosted by the U.S. Forest Service will be Friday through Sunday, Nov. 11–13. Fees will be waived at most of its day-use recreation sites for the weekend. Go to http://www.fs.fed.us for information.
Big League Haircuts will give away free haircuts to anyone who brings in a donation for Military Families of American on Friday, Nov. 11. Locations are 510 28 3/4 Road and 2464 U.S. Highway 6&50. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
There will be a free pancakes and sausage breakfast for veterans at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the HomewardBound Homeless Shelter, 2853 North Ave.
