Orchard Mesa Major boys earn berth in semis, will play on TV

The Orchard Mesa major boys little league team has achieved one of its many goals.

Saturday at the Southwestern Regional tournament in Waco, Texas, Orchard Mesa defeated Altamont Little League of New Mexico 6-3.

With the win, Orchard Mesa guarantees itself a spot in one of Tuesday’s semifinal games. The games will be aired on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and depend on where Orchard Mesa finishes in pool play.

“We are excited,” Orchard Mesa manager Pete Steves said. “Our goal was to win some games here and make it into the semifinals. We know once we get there, anything can happen.”

Orchard Mesa got off to a quick start Saturday, taking a 2-0 lead in the first.

In the top of the inning, Logan Schaneman hit an RBI single that scored Joseph Moyano.

Altamont responded with one run in the bottom of the first.

The score remained at 2-1 until Orchard Mesa added another run in the fourth inning when an Andrew Martinez single scored Derek Rubalcaba, which gave Orchard Mesa a 3-1 lead.

Orchard Mesa allowed one run in the fourth and fifth innings that tied the game at 3-3, but the team was able to put the game away in the top of the sixth by scoring three runs with Altamont walking in two runs.

Martinez pitched a complete game, and shut down Altamont in the bottom of the sixth to close out the win.

Orchard Mesa plays Arkansas at 7 p.m. today with the winner taking first place in Pool A.

At the Cotton Classic in Blytheville, Ark., the Monument 9-10-year-old all stars had a dominating first day.

Monument defeated McAllister, Okla., in its first game 16-2. Zach Coutts pitched the game and Bryce Wilkerson hit an RBI double in the game.

In the second game of the day, Monument defeated Jonesville, Ark., 25-0. Monument scored 25 runs in the first inning, and the game was stopped after the first inning because of the run rule.

Monument faces Blytheville Ark., and Whitehall, Ark., today.
