OUT: OutSide Connection FEbruary 04, 2009

Bird’s-eye view. Eagle eye. Watching you like a hawk.

You get the idea; we’re never far from our largest feathered friends.

This Saturday the Black Canyon and Grand Valley chapters of the Audubon Society offers two (or more) opportunities to discover and learn more about the various raptors that visit western Colorado each winter.

The Black Canyon trip is the annual Golden Triangle Raptor Field Trip, a motor tour of the backroads around Crawford, Hotchkiss and Paonia on the look out for birds of prey. Prior trips have recorded up to 10 different species of raptors, more than most of us would ever expect or be able to name.

Saturday’s second choice is the first day of the Grand Valley chapter’s popular TUMACANBAC tours, also a mid-morning to mid-afternoon backroads trip, this one from Grand Junction to Mack and back (hence the name). This tour isn’t limited to raptors, although there always are some interesting big boys to add to the year’s list. The trip is offered four times, including Sunday and again Feb. 14–15.

These trips welcome birders of all experience levels, so bundle up, pack a lunch and binoculars and go stare back at those who are watching you.
