Palisade boys, Delta girls dominate All-Western Slope League teams

A glance at the All-4A Western Slope League basketball teams suggests some quality basketball was played at Delta and Palisade high schools this winter.

Palisade’s boys, who won the 4A WSL regular-season title and the 4A Southwestern/Western Slope District tournament, placed three players on the first team — seniors Jesus Aguirre and Luke McLean and junior Skyler Miller.

Bulldogs coach Brian Tafel shared co-coach of the year honors with Rifle’s Roger Walters.

Palisade went 17-6 overall, losing to Wheat Ridge in the first round of the 4A state playoffs, 55-53. In a heartbreaking finish for the Bulldogs, Wheat Ridge’s Danny Allen made a long, fadeaway 3-pointer at the buzzer to win it.

Junior Zach Marengo and senior Caden Woods were all-league honorable mention picks for Palisade.

Delta produced the league’s boys player of the year: Chris Black. The senior guard helped the Panthers to an 11-9 record and was joined by senior teammate Douglas Hawkins on the first team. Sophomore Eian Baier and junior Ryan Whiteside were honorable mention picks.

Making the first team for Rifle, which under Walters rebounded from a 3-8 start to go 13-10 and make the 4A state playoffs, were juniors Tanner Quick and Trent Brown. Fellow junior Tanner Rust was an honorable-mention pick.

GIRLS All-4A WSL

Delta’s Skylyn Webb joined her coach, Matt Hamm, in snagging the league’s top honors on the girls side.

Webb, a senior guard, led the Panthers in scoring with 19.7 points per game. A stat-sheet filler, she averaged 3.3 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 4.4 steals per game.

Delta went 19-5 overall and 14-0 in league play to win the 4A WSL title under Hamm’s direction. The Panthers made the Sweet 16 round of the Class 4A playoffs before exiting with a 58-45 loss to Pueblo West.

Webb had teammate company on the first team in the form of senior Callie Gafford and junior Shelby Curtis. Seniors Patti Chapman and Erin Zunich were honorable mention selections.

Palisade junior Cruz Maestas landed a first-team selection. Sophomore teammate Casey Brown earned a nod as an honorable mention.

Rifle’s Chante Church, a junior, and Joey Kuheim, a senior, were first-teamers for Rifle. Seniors Taylor Walters and Jazz Figueira were honorable mention selections.
