Panthers sweep Huskies in fast fashion

Delta used the run rule to limit each game to five innings as it beat Battle Mountain 11-1 and 17-2 in Class 4A Western Slope League baseball Saturday.

Derek Horn went 3 for 3 and drove in four runs. Jeremiah Baier hit two doubles and Isaiah Kathrein pitched a complete game for the Panthers (6-2, 2-1) in the opener.

Horn, Lino Ortiz and Ryan Whiteside each had two hits to pace Delta’s 16-hit attack in Game 2. Whiteside had four RBI.

Loveland 7, Fruita Monument 4: In Game 1 of a nonleague doubleheader, Alec Hansen threw the first five innings for the Indians, shutting out the Wildcats on one hit and four walks while striking out 15.

“He threw gas,” Fruita coach Ray McLennan said of Hansen. “A scout clocked him at 92-93 (mph) consistently.”

The Wildcats got all four of their runs against a reliever in the sixth inning.

Loveland 12, Fruita Monument 9: The Wildcats took an 8-6 lead in Game 2 by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth, and they nearly had much more. With the bases loaded, Logan McLennan hit a sinking liner that the left fielder dove to catch for the final out.

“It was a great catch. He laid out to get it,” Ray McLennan said. “If he doesn’t catch it, Logan either gets a triple or inside-the-park home run.”

The Indians scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 9-7 deficit.

Logan McLennan, Gage Lovern, Conner Cronkhite and Kelin Henke each had two hits for the Wildcats (5-6).

Montrose 14, Durango 10: Durango is not an easy place to play. Just ask Montrose coach Landon Wareham, whose team built an 11-1 lead through 4 1/2 innings and then held on.

“They swing the bats,” Wareham said, explaining the nine runs the Demons scored in the final three innings — five in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh. “It’s hard to keep them down.”

Pete Shearer went 2 for 4 with two RBI to lead Montrose (9-0, 2-0 Southwestern League). Ben Cruz hit a double and starting pitcher Skyler Haynes picked up the win.

Other scores: Paonia collected 30 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from Rangely, winning 20-10 and 9-7.
