Pastor, wife in process of adopting Haitian girl, 10

Kirk Yamaguchi was greatly concerned when he heard of the earthquake that hit Haiti.

The Canyon View Vineyard Church senior pastor was especially concerned for one particular 10-year-old girl whom Yamaguchi and his wife are in the process of adopting.

“Obviously, the immediate thing you think about is: Are the kids (in the orphanage) safe?” he said. “I felt anxiety until we found out. Fortunately, the orphanage only experienced minor damage. It was great relief.”

Yamaguchi, who is a Japanese-American, has been to Haiti and met the girl he is adopting, but he can’t fathom the disaster.

“The first thing you see when you go there is the poverty, lack of resources and infrastructure,” he said. “People there suffer in life generally. Then you add this tragedy on top of that, and you wonder how are these people going to survive. It is hard to comprehend.”

Yamaguchi and the Canyon View Vineyard congregation are raising money to send to Haiti through a Christian-based organization called Convoy of Hope.

“Convoy of Hope is the best organization I’ve seen out there that is able to multiply the resources we give to give direct aid to areas,” he said. “A dollar buys $10 worth of supplies, medical and water-filtration systems.”

Canyon View Vineyard raised $53,000 the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, and some of that is going to Haiti, Yamaguchi said.

“They’ll need more because the need is so big there,” he said.

Yamaguchi said anyone can donate directly through Convey of Hope on its Web site,

First United Methodist Church plans to take an offering to donate to relief efforts through the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

The Diocese of Pueblo will collect donations this weekend at Catholic Masses throughout the southern half of the state, including Grand Junction.
