Pork & Hops heats up Lincoln Park

A barbecue lover’s paradise will roll into town with the 2012 Colorado Pork & Hops Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7–8, at Lincoln Park.

The festival includes a professional Kansas City Barbecue Society competition with more than 50 professional barbecue teams from across the country competing for more than $20,500 in prize winnings. An amateur barbecue competition also will take place along with barbecue tastings, beer vendors and concerts in the park.

The events will be open from 4:30–10 p.m. Friday with general admission at $15 per person. Saturday’s hours will be noon to 10 p.m. with admission at $20 per person. Ages 12 and younger are free.

On Saturday, the US Bank People’s Choice professional barbecue sampling will begin at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $5 for 10 samples from the pros. Buy as many as you want — while supplies last — and vote for your favorite. Proceeds will benefit Mesa County United Way.

The entertainment lineup for Friday will feature the Pineapple Crackers at 5 p.m. and Gin Blossoms at 7 p.m. Saturday’s lineup will begin with JT and the Big Dogs at 2:30 p.m. and continue with Jay Ketchum Band at 5 p.m. and Neal McCoy at 7:30 p.m.

A free shuttle bus will be available from Mesa Mall in the parking lot by Cabela’s and the JC Penney’s wing, near McDonald’s. The shuttle will run every 30 minutes from Mesa Mall and Lincoln Park from 5–10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday.
