The local REI store plans this weekend to give more than $22,000 to three local organizations who work toward stewardship and outdoor recreation.

The organizations set to receive money include the Colorado Monument Association, the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA) and the Grand Mesa Nordic Council. Each year the local REI gives a sizable donation to deserving nonprofits that support the needs of outdoor enthusiasts across the Grand Valley.

The funds will be given at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the REI Store at 644 North Avenue. The community is strongly encouraged to attend, in order to find out more about the organizations and the projects in which they plan on using the money to complete, said Marea Goodman, store manager.

The Monument Association will use its $7,979 check to fund an upcoming volunteer project in Echo Canyon. Goodman said a number of volunteers were still needed to complete the project.

COPMOBA will receive $10,0000, which will be used to construct a bike skills park at the Tabeguache trailhead. Goodman said the organization needs to raise more money and will be providing information about the park to REI customers on Saturday.

The Grand Mesa Nordic Council will use $5,000 to support a new volunteer coordinator position.
