Tess on the Town: Ring in 2013 with spirits of Peach Street

As the new year looms, it seems only fitting to ring out the year in homage to one of the Grand Valley’s most notable artisan producers, Peach Street Distillers.

After winning four medals for individual spirits at the American Distilling Institute competition this past spring, Peach Street was crowned 2012 Distillery of the Year, hands down.

Eight years after firing up the stills in 2004, Peach Street was named the best in the land.

Founded by Rory Donovan and Ska Brewing co-founders Dave Thibodeau and Bill Graham, Peach Street took a gold medal for peach brandy, a silver metal for pear brandy, a bronze medal for Colorado Straight Bourbon and a bronze for Jack and Jenny peach eau de vie.

Some of the distilleries other craft brands include:

■ Grappa of Gewürztraminer, Grappa of Viognier and Grappa Muscat. The Gewertz and Viognier are made with the press pomace from De Beque Canyon Winery, and the Muscat is from Garfield Estates.

■ Small-batch bourbon made from Olathe Sweet Corn — brewed 200 barrels at a time and two years in the making — became Colorado’s first legal bourbon several years ago. Move over, Kentucky.

■ Goat vodka, so named by its creators because goats are “pretty bad ass.”

■ Gin infused with several varieties of hand-picked Colorado juniper berries. The complex spirit includes seven other botanicals, including coriander, angelica and orris root that give it that evergreen essence.

■ Several varieties of brandy made from Palisade grown peaches, pears and plums.

Peach Street spirits can be found at most large liquor stores in the Grand Valley. The craft creations are perfect for sipping, but if you must adulterate, please use simple, pure ingredients, in the spirit of its creators.

I’ll leave you with a few New Year’s toasts: “Be at war with your voices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man.”

“May you never lie, cheat, or drink. But if you must lie, lie in each other’s arms. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink with all of us.”

“As you slide down the banisters of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.”

“May your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions.”
