Ritter asks feds for disaster aid for West Slope counties
Gov. Bill Ritter requested federal disaster aid Friday for several Western Slope counties that have been affected by last year’s drought and the early frost.
In a letter to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Ritter said five Western Slope counties were affected by a wet spring that turned into a dry summer. As a result, various crops in Mesa, Montezuma, Dolores, San Miguel and Montrose counties were damaged.
If approved, the request means agriculture producers would qualify for federal grants and low-interest loans.
The request also includes damage to crops in Fremont County from frost and freezing temperatures.
