I believe Melissa is wrong. I believe that all programs regardless of where the funding comes from should be “on the table”!  I believe special education should be funded if mandated but not on the back of the general fund!

It is high time that District 51 and other Districts call the politicians and legislature on the carpet!  If they want to mandate programs then fund them!  If they are not funded then the services should be cut or dropped and yes at the risk of losing accreditation.

Let the community hold the politicians and legislature accountable if they choose to say a diploma from the district is worthless!

IT is NOT time to tuck tail and run because ill-advised lawmakers pass mandates!  It is time school boards and administrators make tough decisions and pass the reasoning and results onto the communities who elect these people to pass laws and not fund them knowing the consequences of what it will do to educational funding!

To say, anything required by state and federal law is off the table is just the opposite of what should be communicated to politicians!

Let them answer to the public about mandates that are unfunded and causing the burden of budget shortages!

In short it is time to play hardball with those who think this law and that law should be mandated to public education!  On paper it really does look good and in some cases even makes sense.  However, the responsibility does not die in the presentation and passing of a mandate!  With it goes the responsibility of gaining more than votes. The responsibility is following through with the funding for the mandate!  Sometimes that means being politically correct is not the answer!

Good luck to the district!  Play hard ball!  Get the answers from the politicians!

Way to go Steve!!! I think you said it all, I totally agree with you!! Also, “Thank you” for saying what needed to be said!
