Second school bus crashes in same week
A bus carrying about a dozen students to Orchard Mesa Middle School was hit by a passenger car around 7 a.m. Friday at the intersection of 32 and C roads.
The First Student bus No. 49 was heading north on 32 Road and made a left onto C Road when the accident happened.
The accident was the second this week involving a school bus along 32 Road. A bus carrying students to Fruitvale Elementary collided with a car Tuesday morning after the driver of the car lost control and veered into the oncoming bus.
“In terms of damage, it’s a lot greater in this accident than earlier this week,” said Marvin Shipley, fleet manager for First Student, which provides bus service for School District 51.
The driver of a Toyota Camry smashed into the right rear end of the bus, Shipley said, snapping the drive line of the bus. The bus in the earlier accident was driven away from the scene of the accident, while the bus from Friday’s collision had to be towed, Shipley said.
The 24-year-old male driver of the Camry was taken to an area hospital. None of the students on the bus were taken to the hospital, according to District 51.
“One child complained about a bump on the head,” District 51 spokeswoman Christy McGee said. “But all the student were checked by emergency personnel, and everything was fine.”
Another bus took the students to school.
Orchard Mesa Middle School Principal John Murtell sent letters home to parents of the children who were on the bus, McGee said. The letters provided details about insurance in case any of the children need to go to the doctor at a later time.
