Sentinel launches iPad application

The immediacy of online and the portability and familiar layout of the Daily Sentinel available at newsstands are now available in an iPad application.

The Sentinel’s new iPad app displays a digital version of the print edition that readers can flip through with the swipe of a finger. The app costs nothing to download through the iTunes app store and can be used for free for a 30-day trial period. Continued use of the app requires a subscription to the newspaper.

Daily Sentinel Publisher Jay Seaton said the iPad app offers readers another way to enjoy the newspaper.

“I think it reflects the habits of newspaper readers in 2011. That is, if they are anything like me, they read the printed newspaper with their corn flakes and follow up later online at work or at home,” Seaton said.

“There are a lot of tantalizing possibilities we hope to explore in the future through the tablet device. If you have seen Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs’ ‘The Daily,’ you probably have a little insight into where things are headed in this industry.”

Seaton said the newspaper’s next step is to offer a way to read and interact with The Sentinel on a smart phone.

The app has plenty of interactive features. Readers can tap the screen to zoom in on particular articles and advertisements or tap on a reporter’s Sentinel e-mail address, listed below the reporter’s name in an article, to immediately send the reporter a message through an e-mail account on the iPad. Users can tap on a website in an ad and be directly connected to that website.

Those who download the app have the ability to flip through all of the pages of the current day’s newspaper or a past issue, see a list of main articles for the day, and view the paper two pages at a time or see thumbnails of all pages in a single issue on one screen.

The app was created by Burnsville, Minn.-based Technavia.
