Shannon Moralez Memorial Pool Tournament

The fourth annual Shannon Moralez Memorial Pool Tournament was Sept. 14 in Delta and proceeds were given to four families with a member dealing cancer or another serious illness. The family of Shannon Moralez started the tournament in 2010 as a way to remember the young man who battled leukemia and graft-versus-host disease and to help other families with medical expenses. The tournament champion was Mike Mullin of Montrose. Patrick Hayes of Grand Junction was in second place; Allen Krill of Montrose, third place; and Gary Lanier of Grand Junction, fourth place. Ben Gibson, 13, of Montrose has a malignant germinoma brain tumor and is one of 3 percent of childhood cancers that are malignant germ cell tumors, according to tournament organizers. At the time of the tournament, Ben had received 42 chemo treatments at Children’s Hospital in Denver and planned to continue treatments. Ben’s parents are Leslie and James Gibson, and Ben has four siblings.

Brandy Gonzales, a Mesa County resident and formerly of Delta, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012 and was in remission until recently and then received a bone marrow transplant in Denver, according to tournament organizers. Brandy has three children.

Joe was diagnosed with mouth cancer more than a year ago and has since had three surgeries related to cancer in addition to a open heart surgery. Another surgery related to his cancer is required, according to tournament organizers.

She has had three surgeries and a number of treatments. Laura and her husband Dwayne have five children.
