Sooper Credit Union displays the flag given to them by Daniel Dannar in their Grand Junction branch located off Patterson Road.

The small credit union located at 2440 Patterson Road didn’t expect to receive a gift from one of its members.

But Sooper Credit Union happily accepted the generous donation they received last month from a long-time customer, Daniel Dannar.

Dannar, who officially retires from the Air Force in September, donated an American flag flown during combat in Afghanistan to the credit union’s Grand Junction branch.

Branch Manager Judy Moeller said Dannar’s parents took the flag into the branch. It was later framed with a citation and placed on permanent display for all members to enjoy.

“I can’t really put it into words – it’s quite an honor. You think you’re just doing your job, but we have an impact on our members that we don’t realize,” Moeller said.

Moeller said her office knows each of its members by name, which makes it easy to leave an impact on members’ lives.

“Our office is like a big family. They enjoy coming in and talking to us,” Moeller said.

Dannar said the credit union had been there for him since opening his first account at age seven.

“When I joined the military, it didn’t matter where I was, they were always willing to help,” Dannar said.

For this reason, Dannar considered Sooper Credit Union while distributing flags flown in combat tours.

“People don’t understand what it’s like over there—the soldiers fallen, constant day-to-day battle—it’s a huge honor to present the flags,” Dannar said.

He said he hoped the credit union would appreciate the flag in the same way he does. He was surprised by the credit union’s reaction and that this was the first time they were receiving such a gift.

“It was a big honor to give the flag to them. I was very happy to give them something that means a lot to me,” Dannar said.
