Standoff in Clifton against quadriplegic ends after 3 hours
A quadriplegic man barricaded himself inside his Clifton apartment Sunday night, prompting multiple law enforcement agencies to break his front window and carry him out of the home.
Derek Sheeley, 46, 486B Coronado Court, was placed in an ambulance because of the cold temperatures outside, according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin, before he was taken from the scene. Sheeley may face reckless endangerment charges, possibly among others, Benjamin said.
Deputies were called to the home around 8 p.m. after Sheeley’s neighbor reported a bullet came through the wall of the neighbor’s apartment. The bullet came from Sheeley’s apartment, and a shell casing was found on the floor of the neighboring apartment. Another gunshot came out of Sheeley’s front window.
When deputies and SWAT team members knocked on Sheeley’s door, they could hear someone inside.
At 11:15, law enforcement entered the apartment and removed Sheeley. Officers found only Sheeley and a dog inside the apartment.
