Runner-up in writing competition

Qadira Eshelbrenner, a fifth-grade student at Northside Elementary School in Montrose, was selected one of 10 runners-up for the Scholastic Reading Clubs’ Jeff Kinney & Dav Pilkey Story Smashup Contest.

Nearly 9,000 U.S. students submitted writing samples for the contest. Students in Shelly Keefer’s fifth-grade class at Northside watched a webcast that featured “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” author Jeff Kinney and “Captain Underpants” author Dav Pilkey creating the first six panels of a story. Students then added to the story by creating their own three-panel ending that included both the narrative and illustrations.

Each of the 10 runners-up will receive a 20-book collection of graphic novels from Scholastic.
