Hundreds of community members and parents converged May 16 on Grand Valley Middle School in Parachute to experience a lively museum featuring Western expansion exhibits. The exhibits included interactive maps, artifacts, skits, poetry, journal entries and historical fiction writings. Torrey Metcalf, an eighth-grader at Grand Valley Middle School,explained the different tools mountain men used and how each was crafted.

The exhibits included interactive maps, artifacts, skits, poetry, journal entries and historical fiction writings. Aleah Dupras,an eighth-grader at Grand Valley, read her journal written from a pioneer’s perspective.



■ The Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction recently awarded $2,000 scholarships to Colorado Mesa University Circle K Club President Taylor Cecil; incoming Circle K Club President Jamie Hyatt; Circle K Club members Tylen Pavolvski and Maddie Edwards; and Fruita Monument High School Key Club members Emily Roberts and Rhiannon Broyles. 

■ Annie Schmidt of Rifle was named to the spring 2017 semester honors list at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska.

■ Augusta McCain of Grand Junction was named to the president’s honor roll for the spring 2017 semester at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City.

■ Sidney Brown of Grand Junction was named to the spring 2017 semester dean’s list at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

■ Melissa Bower, a student at Colorado Mesa University, was among 10 students in Colorado to receive a $5,000 scholarship from Credit Union of Colorado Foundation for the 2017–18 school year.

■ Nicole Twardowski of Grand Junction was named to the spring 2017 semester dean’s list at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.

■ Simone Heinle of Rangely was named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.

■ The Fruita Monument High School Future Farmers of America Chapter was featured in a weekly one-hour television agri-news program, hosted by farm broadcasters Max Armstrong and Orion Samuelson. “This Week in Agribusiness” featured Fruita FFA chapter members highlighting the chapter’s history, activities and community service.
