Susan Wright takes her game overseas
Local tennis standout to represent U.S. on Connolly Cup team
Susan Wright is representing the United States in international competition again.
The Grand Junction 55-year-old is on the U.S. Maureen Connolly Cup team for women age 55 and older.
They are playing in the 33rd International Tennis Federation Seniors World Team Championships, which started Monday and run through Saturday, in Antalya, Turkey.
The ITF Seniors World Championships is similar to the Association of Tennis Professionals’ Davis Cup for men or Federation Cup for women.
Wright is the team captain this year.
Her teammates are Diane Barker of Daniel Island, S.C., Tina Karwaky of Glendale, Calif., and Patricia Purcell of St. Louis. Barker will play No. 1 singles, and Wright is playing No. 2. Karwaky and Purcell will play doubles.
Wright has represented the U.S. on many United States Tennis Association cup teams, including last year’s Connolly Cup winner. She has represented the U.S. the past 10 years, and the U.S. women’s 55-older team has won the past five Connolly Cup titles.
The U.S. team is the top seed and will compete against 12 other nations.
Wright has played in the USTA and ITF senior tennis circuit since 2003. She has won 59 national titles, including all four national women’s 55-older doubles titles (indoor, hard court, clay court and grass) in 2012. She won three of the four national women’s 55-older singles titles, losing only to Connolly Cup teammate Diane Barker in the clay court championships.
She has won seven father/daughter doubles titles and three senior world doubles championships.
Wright was the Outstanding Colorado Female Player of the Year in 2004 and 2008, the Sportswomen of Colorado tennis award winner in 2004 and 2008, and the ITF World Doubles champion in 2005 and 2009.
The ITF Senior World Individual Championships will take place March 24–31 at some of the same sites in Turkey.
